FAQs

HOW DOES THE BOOKING PROCESS WORK?

Once you confirm your place on a Mawari journey, your experience begins immediately. A $1,000 deposit ($2000 for the Antarctica Expedition) secures your space, after which our team begins coordinating all key elements of your trip including accommodations, flights, and on-the-ground logistics.

Approximately 120 days prior to departure, we'll be in touch with trip updates and final payment details. In the weeks leading up to departure, you'll receive a comprehensive pre-departure guide with confirmed hotels, flight details, arrival instructions, and curated recommendations so you can travel with confidence and ease.

I'M TRAVELING SOLO - IS THAT OKAY?

Absolutely — many travelers join us independently. Our small group sizes and thoughtfully curated shared experiences make it easy to connect naturally.

DO I NEED A PASSPORT OR VISA?

Yes. A valid passport is required for all Mawari journeys and must typically be valid for at least six months beyond the trip's end date. Visa requirements vary by destination and nationality.

Mawari will provide clear guidance as part of your pre-departure materials, though responsibility for securing required documents remains with the traveler.

IS THIS TRIP RIGHT FOR ME?

Mawari journeys are designed for travelers who value comfort, cultural depth and exceptional service in the LGBTQ+ community. Our experiences balance guided exploration with moments of leisure, often incorporating private transportation, expert local guides, and premium accommodations.

While our itineraries may include walking, sightseeing, and optional excursions, the overall pace is considered and refined. If you have questions about activity levels or accessibility, we are happy to discuss whether a particular journey is the right fit.

SHOULD I BRING LOCAL CASH?

We recommend carrying a modest amount of local currency for small purchases, though most destinations accept credit cards widely. Mawari accommodations are selected with convenience in mind, and your trip leader can assist with access to banking services, if needed.

Any relevant recommended cash amounts will be shared in your pre-trip communications.

WHAT TIME DOES THE TRIP START AND END?

Your journey officially begins at 4:00 PM on Day 1, typically with a private welcome gathering at your hotel. The trip concludes on the final day with no scheduled group activities, allowing you the flexibility to depart at a time that suits your travel plans.

ARE AIRPORT TRANSFERS PROVIDED?

Yes. Airport transfers are arranged by Mawari and included as part of your experience. Detailed arrival instructions will be provided prior to departure to ensure a smooth, seamless welcome.

WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE TRIP PRICE?

Each Mawari journey is thoughtfully curated. While inclusions vary by destination, trips typically include:

  • Hand-selected 4.5 and 5-star accommodations
  • Private transportation throughout the itinerary
  • All breakfasts and dinners, including adult beverages with dinner
  • Airport transfers
  • A dedicated Mawari trip leader
  • Complimentary flight search and booking assistance
  • Elevated experiences in each destination

Full details are outlined on each trip page.

WHY IS THE SINGLE SUPPLEMENT SO HIGH?

When two travelers share a Mawari trip, they share the cost of a room. When you travel solo, that room is all yours and the cost stays the same. The single supplement simply covers the half a travel companion would have otherwise paid for. Because Mawari is built around premium lodging, the room rates start higher than at a standard hotel, which leads to a higher single supplement than some of our repeat Detours guests may be used to.

WILL MY MOBILE PHONE WORK OVERSEAS?

Most modern phones function internationally, depending on your carrier and plan. We recommend checking with your provider in advance or using an international eSIM or local SIM for convenience. Wi-Fi is available at all Mawari accommodations.

WHO CAN TRAVEL WITH MAWARI?

Mawari is a gay travel brand, and our trips are designed with the LGBTQ+ community at heart. That said, we welcome anyone who travels with openness, respect, and a genuine curiosity for the world. Historically, roughly 99% of our travelers are gay men.

WHAT IF I NEED TO CANCEL?

Cancellation and rescheduling terms vary based on timing and are outlined in our Booking Conditions, which form part of your booking agreement. We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance to protect your investment.

DO I NEED TRAVEL INSURANCE?

Yes. Travel medical insurance is mandatory for all Mawari journeys. We also strongly encourage enhanced coverage that includes trip cancellation, interruption, and baggage protection.

Proof of insurance is required prior to departure.
